In 2012 Perfect Moment was commissioned, along with our heritage specialist partner Emmie Kell Consulting, to write Cornwall's first Museum Strategy which would provide a framework to help consolidate and strengthen the museum sector in Cornwall. In writing the strategy we explored new methods of working and innovative ways of meeting the challenges faced by cultural institutions in tough economic times. This included identifying new approaches to attracting resources, strengthening joint working across the sector and promoting the work of the sector to key stakeholders.
This new strategy brought about a stronger commitment from Cornwall's museums to work together to secure resources and maximise their overall impact. In response to the demands of the strategy we assisted the larger museums in Cornwall to form the Cornwall Museums Partnership.
Having established the partnership, Perfect Moment and Emmie Kell Consulting took the strategy forward, writing several successful funding applications and providing project management for their delivery. It is one of only nine partnerships in the UK to be awarded substantial funds (£250k) from the Heritage Lottery Funds Catalyst Umbrella Programme to support the development of fundraising expertise throughout the sector. It is also one of only 21 organisations in England to become a member of Arts Council England's highly prestigious Major Partner Museum Programme, with a three year award of £1.5m towards total project costs of £3m.
As a result the Cornwall Museums Partnership has become one of the most successful rural based museums sectors in the UK described by the Arts Council England as "a flagship project for rural areas throughout the UK where museums of all sizes are working together to share resources, skills and knowledge to help them deliver exciting programmes of exhibitions and activities."
Following development work undertaken by Perfect Moment, The Cornwall Museum Partnership has recently been awarded Charitable Status, opening up new funding streams for the group as a whole.
Now fully established with a board of trustees and its own chief executive leading a team of support staff the Cornwall Museum Partnership will ensure that museums in Cornwall of all shapes and sizes have improved resilience, and will increase their valuable contribution of the sector to the social and economic life of Cornwall.
When we commissioned Cornwall's first Museum Strategy, we had no idea that it would lead so quickly to the establishment of the Cornwall Museums Partnership and its recognition as a flagship organisation for museums in rural areas. This fantastic achievement has been due in no small part to the energy and dedication of Perfect Moment and Emmie Kell Consulting in managing all aspects of the development of the partnership.
